Some poles are stronger than other poles. In general, fiberglass is the strongest, with extruded aluminum at mid-level strength and peg post or a pole with a spike on the end coming in as the weakest. However, all pole types are safe and will keep kids out of the pool. If you want to get into the details of pole strength there are plus and minus to all three.
